What is a transformer used for??

What does a transformer do? What is it used for? I’ve only read on the internet that it converts energy into voltage, but I would like a better explanation.

a transformer converts voltage and current. Depending on the situation, it increases the voltage and decreases the current, e.g. for neon advertising or to be able to transmit electricity over long distances with little loss, or from a high voltage with a low current to a low voltage with a high current e.g. for welding, for the bell or the model train. here it is less a question of high amperage, but rather that a low voltage is harmless for humans.

you can think of a transformer as a kind of power transmission. i.e. high speeds with low torque (low force) or low speeds with high torque (high force)
