In the New Year, a lentil dish should be on the table – because it should bring good luck and a fortune. But even without superstition, a lentil stew not only tastes good – with our video instructions it is also quickly prepared.

Because lentils resemble small coins, they are supposed to be a blessing – and that’s why a lentil dish is traditionally served on the table on New Year’s Eve or New Year, especially in Italy and the USA. If you have now really got an appetite for a lentil stew, you can easily cook the dish with the step-by-step explanation in the video above.

Recipe: Classic lentil stew with Vienna sausages

Allow around 50 minutes of preparation time for six servings for this recipe.

  • 200 g black lentils
  • 150 g potatoes
  • 2 carrots
  • 100 g celeriac
  • 100 g leeks
  • 1½ l vegetable stock
  • 50 g bacon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 30 ml white wine vinegar
  • 4 Vienna sausages
  • 20 g parsley
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • Salt pepper
  1. Prepare the bacon, leek, carrots, celeriac and potatoes according to the instructions in the video.
  2. Heat the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add the bacon and fry for about three to five minutes until golden brown.
  3. Then add the carrots, celeriac and potatoes. Salt and pepper the whole thing and let it roast for about three to five minutes.
  4. Now add the lentils and mix everything together well. Then quench the whole thing with the vegetable stock and let it simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes until the lentils and potatoes are cooked through.
  5. In the meantime, cut the sausages into bite-sized pieces and roughly chop the parsley. After the 20 to 30 minutes, add both ingredients to the stew and also add the vinegar.
  6. Add the sugar to taste and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve the lentil stew in deep bowls garnished with parsley. A slice of fresh bread goes well with it.
